Based on real-life murders, Under the Banner of Heaven is a well-acted true crime drama that gives insight to the beginning of the Mormon religion.

After Brenda Lafferty (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her daughter are murdered, Latter Day Saint Detective Jeb Pyre (Andrew Garfield) and Paiute Detective Bill Taba (Gil Birmingham) begin to investigate the well-known Lafferty family of Utah’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Captivating performances from an ensemble cast are given throughout. Amongst the standouts are Wyatt Russell and Sam Worthington as Lafferty brothers descending into madness through their religion and Denise Gough and Chloe Pirrie as Lafferty wives trying to escape their situation.

Flashbacks to the days of Joseph Smith (Andrew Burnap) and Brigham Young (Scott Michael Campbell) provides important history that connects to the modern story.
