Almost 60 years after it premiered on Broadway, Funny Girl is back, but she comes with a lot of issues.
Fanny Brice (Beanie Feldstein) will do anything it takes to make it on stage. As she’s making her rise in vaudeville, she meets the well-off Nick Arnstein (Ramin Karimloo) and the two fall for each other. The couple runs into financial troubles as Fanny becomes a Broadway star.
Feldstein is perfect in the comedic sense and proves why she’s one of the funniest actresses around, however she can’t keep up vocally in a role made famous by Barbra Streisand. She and Karimloo also have zero chemistry, which fails what is ultimately a love story.
Unfortunately, the sets and costumes don’t add much and makes it feel more like a good high school production.
Final say: Funny, but not much else. ★★☆☆☆
