With themes that remain under fire since its Broadway premiere in 2003, the story of Take Me Out is just as relevant as ever.
Biracial baseball star Darren Lemming (Jesse Williams) causes a commotion when he comes out as gay. When new player Shane Mungitt (Michael Oberholtzer) joins the team, his sheltered views put his team and Darren in a bad light.
This play is known for its nudity, which happens a few times in the locker room scenes. You end up seeing almost every character fully naked. But the story is much more important than the nudity. The show hits big notes on the racism and homophobia, as well as class and masculinity.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson shines as Darren’s accountant Mason and ends up being the heart of the show.
Final say: You could watch this for nine innings. ★★★★★
