Telling the same story repeatedly sounds boring, but continual changes in point of view and in the genre in which its being told makes The Afterparty an absolute standout.
At the afterparty of a high school reunion, pop star/actor Xavier (Dave Franco) is found dead. Detective Danner (Tiffany Haddish) investigates which of Xavier’s classmates could have murdered him, while lead suspect Aniq (Sam Richardson) does some searching of his own.
Each character’s recollection of the night follows a different form of film genre, including horror, action, animation, romantic comedy and musical. The audience keeps getting new clues while being able to enjoy an array of stories.
Standout performances come from Jamie Demetriou as Walt, whom no one can seem to remember, and Ben Schwartz as Yasper, who leads the musical episode.
Final say: A party of its own. ★★★★★
