A fantastic crime thriller starring two of the most beloved British actors of all-time, The Good Liar is entrancing from the start and full of twists.
Betty McLeish (Helen Mirren) and Roy Courtnay (Ian McKellen) meet on an online dating website and form a close companionship. Betty’s grandson Steven (Russell Tovey) is weary about how quickly the pair are moving in their relationship. But Roy is secretly using Betty to drain her funds and scam her.
Mirren and McKellen have great chemistry and light up the screen together. Both of them play the multiple sides of their characters perfectly.
The main issue is that the final twist is strongly hinted at too soon and the reveal, in turn, is not shocking, though the story behind it is intriguing.
Final say: Good liars, great film. ★★★★☆
