Rooted deep in Irish folklore with brilliant traditional animation, Wolfwalkers isn’t just a fantastic story, but also a spectacle to watch.
When Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell (Simon McBurney) fears the farming land of Kilkenny is threatened by a pack of wolves, he orders Bill Goodfellowe (Sean Bean) to exterminate them. Bill’s daughter Robyn (Honor Kneafsey) has an encounter with a young girl – Mebh (Eva Whittaker) – and tries to protect the wolves.
There’s quite an emotional depth to this story, especially in terms of Mebh’s character protecting her pack and her mother. Whittaker provides strong voice acting that allows you to really feel the range of her emotions.
The animation is brilliant and since so many animated films have turned to CGI, it’s refreshing to see this story brought to life by hand-drawn images.
Final say: Wonderfully captivating. ★★★★☆
