Theater: Fleabag – West End

Opened: August 28, 2019

Book by: Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Original West End Cast: Phoebe Waller-Bridge

In a performance that’s just as hilarious as it is heartbreaking, playwright and actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge commands the stage with a triumphant performance.

Fleabag (Waller-Bridge) goes in for an interview with a company currently handling sexual misconduct allegations. When the interview takes a turn for the worse, she starts recounting events in her life that lead to this horrid moment.

What makes audiences connect to Fleabag is her refreshing honesty. She’s messy and sexual and doesn’t have a great relationship with her family. Instead of seeing the cookie-cutter perfect lead, you’ll empathize with this one.

The set and lighting are kept to a minimum with Waller-Bridge sitting in a chair center stage. Allowing all the focus to be on a stagnant person is risky, but it pays off with her physical and verbal emotional drives.

Final say: A beautiful mess. ★★★★★
