Music: If the Fates Allow – A Hadestown Holiday Album

Released: November 20, 2020

By: Jewelle Blackman, Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer & Kay Trinidad

Featuring: Patrick Page, André De Shields, Reeve Carney, Eva Noblezada & Amber Gray

Despite the Broadway shutdown of 2020, the Fates of Hadestown are still bringing some cheer with their holiday album.

The great thing is that many songs not typically covered on holiday albums are featured. While the sound of this one is already different as it follows the Hadestown score of blues, jazz and folk, having lesser-known songs makes it stand out as more of an original album.

Jewelle Blackman, Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer and Kay Trinidad have fantastic harmonies that can often seem haunting, which again meshes well with their roles in the musical.

They’re also joined by several of their lead cast members. Eva Noblezada and Reeve Carney give a beautiful rendition of Sara Bareilles’ “Winter Song,” while André De Shields performs one of the few popular songs – “Blue Christmas” – with a jazzy twist.

Final say: Glad the fates have allowed. ★★★★☆
