Released: March 23, 2015
By: James Bay
English sing-songwriter James Bay gives a strong debut that fuses folk, blues and soul with rock supported by a raspy voice that oozes emotion.
Bay has many songs that are begging to be performed in front of a live audience, but it’s not the kind of music that will fill stadiums, but rather more intimate crowds. Though, his hopeful lyrics in “Get Out While You Can” invoke a similar feeling and sound to Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run.”
In a world that feels fake with social media – and news lately – “Best Fake Smile” is a good reminder of being yourself that you’ll rock along to within the first moments, while the romantic “Hold Back the River” has easily singable lyrics that make you want to be part of the chorus backing Bay up.
Final say: A great blend. ★★★★☆
