Theater: The Inheritance – Part I

Opened: November 17, 2019

Book by: Matthew Lopez

Original Broadway Cast: Jordan Barbour, Ryan M. Buggle, Jonathan Burke, Andrew Burnap, Darryl Gene Daughtry Jr., Dylan Frederick, Kyle Harris, John Benjamin Hickey, Paul Hilton, Samuel H. Levine, Carson McCalley, Tre Ryder, Kyle Soller & Arturo Luis Soria

A beautiful story inspired by E. M. Forster’s Howards End, the first part of The Inheritance is full of heartbreak and friendship.

Eric Glass (Kyle Soller) and Toby Darling (Andrew Burnap) get engaged just as Toby’s novel is being turned into a play and Eric finds out he’s losing his family’s apartment. While Toby is out of town for tryouts, Eric rekindles a friendship with the older Walter (Paul Hilton) and later his husband Henry (John Benjamin Hickey).

The play has scenes focusing on the lead-up to and night of the 2016 presidential election. There’s an ease followed by shock and fear at the results, which mirrors many people’s responses.

There’s a particularly haunting scene discussing living through the AIDS crisis and an ending is packed with emotion.

Final say: A beautiful piece that blends fiction and truth. ★★★★★
