A true story of American soldiers in Afghanistan, The Outpost is a strong depiction of what war looks like and does well in showing a range of emotions – including mental illness – in the soldiers.

In 2009, 53 soldiers are occupying Combat Outpost Keating located near the Pakistani border at the bottom of three mountains – an easy target for the Taliban to attack from above. When around 400 enemy insurgents start attacking, the U.S. soldiers do what it takes to survive.

The way this was filmed helps those who have not served in war – like me – understand the insanity that becomes of an outpost when an attack starts. Long tracking shots allow for you to follow one person for a solid amount of time, and they give you both close-ups and wide shots of what’s happening.

Final say: Hard to process. ★★★★★
