Based on the Book of Saint Matthew, Godspell is an upbeat show featuring many different musical styles. And while you may not know what is happening, the performances will keep your attention.

Jesus (Hunter Parrish) gathers followers and uses them to help spread his message of love and forgiveness. He’s betrayed by Judas (Wallace Smith) and is subsequently crucified.

Parrish has a wholesomeness about him that makes you believe in his Jesus. He’s accompanied by talented performers – many of whom would later become big stars of the stage and screen, including Orange is the New Black’s Uzo Aduba, future Tony-winner Lindsay Mendez and Be More Chill’s George Salazar.

There’s not much of a storyline until the second half of the second act, but the show tells parables in modern ways.

Final say: The spell might not catch you at first. ★★★☆☆
