Though an interesting thriller, The Da Vinci Code – based on Dan Brown’s best-selling novel – never quite becomes the intense mystery that it hopes to be.
After a murder occurs in the Louvre, symbol expert Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) and police cryptographer Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou) begin following a case that would have epic implications on the religious world. They’re followed by a monk (Paul Bettany) who tries to bury the information for a higher cause.
Upon the book’s release and again with this film, the storyline is highly controversial. Thinking that Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene had a child together will be off-putting to many, but also intriguing to many others.
While Bettany and Ian McKellen both give fine performances, there’s something missing in Tautou and the usually fantastic Hanks.
Final say: You’ll have many questions. ★★★☆☆
