On his second album, former One Direction member Harry Styles shows his strength as a solo artist.

Styles excels because he doesn’t compromise the sound he wants to make for songs that would be better suited for the pop charts. In doing so, he’s able to retain his former legion of fans while also ushering in a new wave. Bringing in many elements that make the pop rock sounds more along the indie and funk lines, Styles creates a sound all his own.

His vocals are filled with beautiful harmonies that can be haunting in songs like “Cherry.” The romantic “Adore You” shows the happiness of a relationship and its initial passion, while “To Be So Lonely” goes to the other side of the spectrum.
