In typical Irish fashion, Normal People – based on Sally Rooney’s best-selling novel –has some heartwarming ups and heartbreaking downs, but its incredible production and acting will constantly keep you in love.
Wealthy outcast Marianne Sheridan (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and popular athlete Connell Waldron (Paul Mescal) begin a secret relationship in secondary school. They break it off before both going to Trinity College Dublin but keep coming back into each other’s lives during their undergraduate years.
Both Edgar-Jones and Mescal give incredible performances and you can feel the strength of their chemistry, but Mescal’s Connell steals the show. He’s incredibly written and shows great character development as a man full of vulnerabilities and flaws.
Directed by Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald, intimate scenes are executed tastefully and packed with emotion like every other scene in the show.
Final say: Normal, but special. ★★★★★
