For a little over two hours, Escape to Margaritaville packs in Jimmy Buffett’s hit songs alongside a mind-boggling plot that will make you question if you should’ve spent money on your tickets or just a trip to Key West yourself.
Career-minded Rachel (Sarah Hinrichsen) and her soon-to-be-married friend Tammy (Shelly Lynn Walsh) take a pre-wedding trip to the Margaritaville Hotel in the Caribbean. Rachel meets bar singer Tully Mars (Chris Clark) there and has a passionate love affair that proves to last longer than she’d anticipated.
If Buffet’s songs had flowed organically into the show, it might be a cute romantic comedy. However, writers Greg Garcia and Mike O’Malley need to force the story into different directions in order for a song to appear. You feel it happening and will find it cringeworthy.
Final say: You’ll be asking to escape. ★☆☆☆☆
