Many social topics surrounding the LGBTQIA+ community in terms of family life are brought to light in this comedic drama from writer-director Lisa Cholodenko.
In the summer before she starts college, Joni (Mia Wasikowska) is urged by her younger brother Laser (Josh Hutcherson) to reach out to their biological father Paul (Mark Ruffalo). Though her mothers Nic (Annette Bening) and Jules (Julianne Moore) are hesitant, Jules accepts him in while Nic continues to push back.
There’s great commentary here on connecting with a biological parent – whether it’s from being part of an LGBTQIA+ family or not. Joni and Laser’s wavering acceptance of a man they don’t know continually makes the story interesting, especially as he continues to affect their moms.
Bening and Moore give stellar performances. You’ll shift between loving them and hating them.
Final say: Not everyone’s alright. ★★★★★
