With its original Portuguese title Hoje Eu Quero Voltar Sozinho or Today I Want to Go Back Alone, Daniel Ribeiro’s debut feature film is a lovely teen coming-of-age story that puts the spotlight on a blind character.
Leonardo (Ghilherme Lobo) is best friends with Giovana (Tess Amorim) who helps him throughout school managing notetaking and walking around. When new student Gabriel (Fábio Audi) starts and joins their friend group, everything changes – especially when both like him.
Lobo gives a star-making performance and is sympathetic as he tries to prove to everyone around him that he’s capable of living a normal life despite his disability. His relationship with his parents feels authentic but is even more strained as they hold him back.
Leonardo and Gabriel’s relationship is beautiful to watch as it blossoms.
Final say: The love is easy to see. ★★★★★
