With an interesting premise and a title that draws you in, Dear White People presents a story of modern racism that’s pervasive in the higher education world.
Lionel Higgins (Tyler James Williams) gets an offer to write for Winchester University’s prestigious student newspaper by covering Samantha White (Tessa Thompson) – the newly elected head of house at the all-black Armstrong/Parker. Her victory raises tensions, especially among white students like Kurt Fletcher (Kyle Gallner).
America has always had a racism problem and just because we’ve taken steps towards equality does not mean that racism has disappeared. Blackface – which is at the core of the main party – has been a problem in the media since its inception.
Director/writer Justin Simien brilliantly brings this story to life with a fantastic cast led by breakout star Thompson.
Final say: Dear white people, get it together. ★★★★☆
