While at first Carry On seems like an obvious rip-off of the Harry Potter series, Rainbow Rowell soon develops her own voice and makes you forget the land J.K. Rowling created.
Simon Snow is the chosen one, but that doesn’t mean he’s good at it. His roommate at school is Baz – an evil vampire who is going to be his ultimate competitor in the end. But when the chance comes to discover more about Baz’s deceased mother, a former headmistress, the two team up.
It takes a while for Baz to arrive, but when he does, his storyline changes everything. He’s in love with Simon and can’t admit that he’s a vampire. It humanizes the so-called villain and gives you someone and a few somethings to cheer for.
Final say: A new magic that’s spellbinding. ★★★★☆
