With a score that transcended the boundaries of musical theater, it wasn’t a surprise that Hamilton creator chose to have the songs redone by today’s biggest artists.
The album is comprised of songs either directly from or relating to the hit musical. On the songs that are solely covers, they’re great, but leave you longing for the original versions that were already at the top of their game. Only Kelly Clarkson’s “It’s Quiet Uptown” has the emotional and vocal strength to rival the original.
However, the ones that are related to other songs amp up the relevance of the musical. Taking a lyric from “Yorktown,” “Immigrants (We Get the Job Done)” challenges the views of the current political administration with artists of many different backgrounds.
Final say: Lin-Manuel Miranda does not disappoint. ★★★★☆
