The Crucible is Arthur Miller’s well-known story of the Salem Witch trials featuring a group of young girls who claim to have witchcraft used upon in order to divert attention from them.
Director Ivo Van Hove created a very-stripped down production of this classic. The minimalist design makes it seem like this could be happening anywhere. The set is mostly bare and looks as if it is to take place in an empty classroom with grays, dark blues, white, and black making up the color scheme.
What is really striking is the commanding performances of the cast – especially Ben Whishaw, Sophie Okonedo, and Saoirse Ronan – who use their international accents throughout.
However, the show moves extremely slowly. There are often times when everyone on stage stays in the same positions for multiple minutes.
Final say: Don’t go if you’re tired. ★★☆☆☆
