Having Wednesday be a major player in both Addams Family Values and Wednesday works because of the personality the actors bring to the character but having her be the main character here was a mistake.
Worried about his relationship with his children, Gomez (Oscar Isaac) takes the family on vacation. Before leaving, Mr. Mustela (Wallace Shawn) approaches Gomez and Morticia (Charlize Theron) stating that Wednesday (Chloë Grace Moretz) may not be their daughter.
Despite their wackiness, the Addams have always been about family. Breaking that in this film and allowing Wednesday to easily believe Cyrus (Bill Hader) is her father doesn’t feel right. Moretz incorporates Wednesday’s famous monotone voice, but other iterations still add something magical despite this.
When you reach the climax in the third act, you’ll feel it’s weird even by Addams standards.
Final say: Skip this vacation. ★☆☆☆☆
