Film: The Sea Beast

Opened: June 24, 2022

Directed by: Chris Williams

Starring: Karl Urban, Zaris-Angel Hator, Jared Harris, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Kathy Burke, Jim Carter, Doon Mackichan & Dan Stevens

Despite having familiar qualities presented in a new way, The Sea Beast is an exciting adventure film that will keep all ages entertained.

Captain Crow (Jared Harris) helms the legendary monster hunting ship, the Inevitable, which Jacob Holland (Karl Urban) is primed to take over. On their journey to kill the Red Bluster, Maisie Brumble (Zaris-Angel Hator) stows away and makes an unlikely connection with the beast.

The premise of man not understanding monster has been done many times – see specifically How to Train Your Dragon. Comparing it to other films of this kind, the animation isn’t as sharply done, and plot lines are underused or forgotten.

However, you’re immediately brought into the action. This hooks viewers and makes you curious. The outcome is the same but it’s a fun adventure.

Final say: A beast we’ve experienced before. ★★★☆☆
