From the mind of Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, The Gilded Age shows New York society in its finest glamour during the late 1800s.
George and Bertha Russell (Morgan Spector & Carrie Coon) arrive in New York City excited to join society with their new money. Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) arrives across the street to live with her aunts (Christine Baranski & Cynthia Nixon) and brings writer Peggy Scott (Denée Benton) with her.
Like other Fellowes projects, the costuming and set designs are superb. They’re enough on their own to make you want to watch the show. However, the perfectly casted ensemble is what clinches you.
It would be nice to have more balanced time between the upstairs and downstairs characters, but the smaller time we spend with the servants is never wasted.
Final say: A new period piece obsession. ★★★★☆
