Disney loves its live-action remakes, so the announcement of a live-action Mulan was not surprising. However, its end result is something that strays too far from the original content and doesn’t do much in improving its storyline.
Hua Mulan (Yifei Lu) defies tradition and the law when she decides to disguise herself as a man to replace her ailing father (Tzi Ma) in the Imperial Army. Their enemy Böri Khan (Jason Scott Lee) is intent on avenging his father’s death and uses his ally Xianniang (Gong Li), a witch, to help take down his enemies.
This remake removes and/or replaces several characters from the animated film and is also deprived of all music – meaning the songs fans love are gone. Though the film looks great, its story doesn’t hold the same strength.
Final say: Needs to look at its reflection. ★★☆☆☆
