Original Broadway Revival Cast: Corey Hawkins, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Rob Demery & George Anthony Richardson
Featuring the incredible talents of consistently rising stars Corey Hawkins and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Topdog/Underdog returns to Broadway in a stellar and tense revival.
After being thrown out by his wife, Lincoln (Hawkins) moves into his younger brother Booth’s (Abdul-Mateen II) apartment. Booth reminds Lincoln that he wasn’t supposed to make it a permanent arrangement, but Lincoln is providing the only source of income.
Both brothers are struggling in life and love, but Hawkins and Abdul-Mateen II present them in such different ways that it feels anything but the same. Hawkins embraces the physical comedy of Lincoln, while you consistently see Abdul-Mateen II’s mind at work.
While Act I is mostly conversations between the two, tensions rise in Act II and will have you holding your breath during the climax.
Final say: This underdog is top dog. ★★★★☆
