Adapting Lin-Manuel Miranda’s stage musical to the big screen, director Jon M. Chu brings In the Heights to life with a dynamic cast, bright colors and fantastic choreography.
Usnavi (Anthony Ramos) dreams of a better life in his family’s native Dominican Republic. Benny (Corey Hawkins) and Nina (Leslie Grace) reconnect their relationship despite their lives going in different directions. Vanessa (Melissa Barrera) wants a better life downtown as a fashion designer.
Ramos gets to step into the spotlight after being a supporting character in Miranda’s Hamilton. His hopeful, authentic vocals are unrivaled. Hawkins and Grace have charismatic chemistry and their duets are highlights of the film.
While the cast could’ve had more diversity, it’s amazing to see a Latin story and music represented on the big screen in a beautiful way.
Final say: A movie musical that we needed. ★★★★★
