TV: Abbott Elementary – Season 1

Premiered: December 7, 2021

On: ABC

Starring: Quinta Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti, Sheryl Lee Ralph, William Stanford Davis, Zack Fox, Larry Owens & Reggie Hayes

In its first season, Abbott Elementary is able to provide more comedic entertainment than most shows do in their entire run.

Working in an underfunded, primarily black elementary school, second grade teacher Janine Teagues (Quinta Brunson) tries to stay optimistic for her students and colleagues. However, Principal Ava Coleman (Janelle James) is more worried about her social life than proper running of the school.

Brunson created the show as well, and she hits on many important messages on the way while keeping the tone funny. Between talking about alternative learning methods to noting the lack of materials given to teachers, it’ll open audiences’ eyes.

The ensemble cast is perfect in their roles from Lisa Ann Walter’s tough Melissa to Chris Perfetti’s awkward and openly gay Jacob to Sheryl Lee Ralph’s poised Barbara.

Final say: This gets an A+. ★★★★★
