Combining adventure, science fiction and comedy with a family road trip and beautiful animation, The Mitchells vs. the Machines is the best non-Disney animated film of 2021.

Katie Mitchell (Abbi Jacobson) is excited to go to college and get away from her father Rick (Danny McBride), who doesn’t understand her passion for filmmaking. While taking her to college, virtual assistant PAL (Olivia Colman) begins her world domination with the PAL Max robots. The Mitchells become humanity’s last hope to save the world.

Screenwriters Mike Rianda (who also directs) and Jeff Rowe create a genuinely hilarious script that highlights both the flaws and the best qualities of the Mitchell family. You’ll be able to spot the similarities with your own family members.

The movie is so over the top, but completely worth it.

Final say: A winner. ★★★★★
