RuPaul’s Drag Race has produced many singers, but one of the most successful is All Stars season three winner Trixie Mattel. In this EP, she covers four songs from different time periods and puts her own spin on them.
Opening with a romantically haunting cover of Lana Del Ray’s “Video Games,” Mattel starts the EP off on a high note. She follows it up with the Violet Femmes’ “Blister in the Sun,” which shows her at her best with throwback rock.
Cher’s “Believe” is stripped back with a country twang. And Mattel finishes with Orville Peck duetting on Johnny and June Carter Cash’s “Jackson.” Having a country drag queen with another LGBTQ+ country artist taking on a legendary song like that is a step forward that the country music scene unfortunately won’t see.
Final say: A good time guaranteed. ★★★★☆
