While being the final film of stop-motion visual effects artist Ray Harryhausen and featuring some heavy-hitting supporting actors, Clash of the Titans severely shows its age in modern times.
After Cassiopeia (Siân Phillips) insults Thetis (Maggie Smith) in her temple, Princess Andromeda (Judi Bowker) is sentenced to be claimed by the Kraken. Perseus (Harry Hamlin) is sent on a quest to find an item that will save Andromeda’s life.
Though Hamlin looks the part of a demigod, his acting fails to match his looks. He’s hard to watch alongside the superior talents of Smith, Burgess Meredith and Laurence Olivier.
In a time before the CGI special effects, this film probably looked awesome onscreen with the stop-motion Kraken, Medusa and Calibos. However, today they’re more akin to the original King Kong and Godzilla.
Final say: A clash of times. ★★☆☆☆
