A hilarious trip into the fairytale world, Douglas Carter Beane’s original play that pulls from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one that will charm even if it’s not lasting.
When Titania (Julie Halston) and Oberon (Arnie Burton) start going through marital issues, their children – fairies from many famous stories – are warned they will cease to exist if the couple divorces.
Like many fairytales, the book is written in verse. While this may be distracting at first, you get used to it quickly. It becomes part of the shtick and adds to the comedy. Along with the costumes and sets, the show is transporting.
Broadway vet Jackie Hoffman stands out with her unique brand of humor, while Jason Tam is memorable in both of his roles as Cupid and Prince Charming.
Final say: A fantastic escape. ★★★★☆
