Reigning in a new wave of Marvel superheroes on the big screen, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a beautifully told story representing strong Asian culture and makes a star out of the lesser-known Simu Liu.
Having escaped his past after his mother’s (Fala Chen) death and his father’s (Tony Leung) difficult training, Shang-Chi (Liu) lives a quiet life in San Francisco alongside his friend Katy (Awkwafina) until the two are attacked. The pair must find Shang-Chi’s sister Xialing (Meng’er Zhang) to protect their mother’s homeland from their ruthless father.
The fight scenes in this film are superior to any other Marvel film with choreographer Andy Cheng making the one-on-one battles into dances. It’s mesmerizing from start to finish. Liu and Michelle Yeoh’s training scene particularly stands out with Yeoh’s grace.
Final say: One of Marvel’s best. ★★★★★
