While not at the emotional deepness of a Disney film, Sing will still charm adults and children with a fast-paced storyline and fantastic performances from its all-star cast.
Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) is trying to save his beloved theater by holding a singing competition. Stay-at-home mom Rosita (Reese Witherspoon), teenager Ash (Scarlett Johansson), criminal adjacent Johnny (Taron Egerton) and arrogant Mike (Seth MacFarlane) are all contenders, while shy Meena (Tori Kelly) helps backstage.
The character animation is fantastic down to their ever-changing facial expressions. And the characters have great stories with Meena and Johnny both having things to prove to their family and Rosita wanting to follow her long-ago dream.
With memories of the American Idol auditions in your head, it’s entertaining to watch, and the music choices are brilliant – especially Kelly’s “Hallelujah.”
Final say: Sing your heart out. ★★★★☆
