With a gut-wrenching performance by Vanessa Kirby, Pieces of a Woman is a heart-breaking piece of work that will linger with you long after you watch it.
After Martha (Kirby) and Sean’s (Shia LaBeouf) homebirth ends in devastation, the two struggle to move on with their lives. Their midwife Eva (Molly Parker) is brought to court, but a conviction can’t help their internal grief and pain.
Kirby has long been pushed to the sidelines, though she always makes her mark (see her scene-stealing performances in The Crown and About Time). This film finally gives her the chance to shine. She takes the brokenness of Martha and makes you sympathetic even as she pushes those closest to her away.
Much of the story is subtle and quiet, but it fits with the storyline.
Final say: It’ll leave you shattered. ★★★★☆
