Throughout her publishing career, Becky Albertalli has proven time and again that she’s a champion for the LGBTQ+ community. Once more, she proves how heartfelt and funny the coming-of-age experience can be with Kate in Waiting.

Kate Garfield and Anderson Walker do everything together. They live next door, carpool and even share crushes. When their summer crush Matt Olsson ends up moving to their town for senior year, their worlds are turned upside down.

Something wonderful about Kate and Anderson’s friend group is that they’re all used to LGBTQ+ issues so when Kate and Anderson’s crushes on Matt increase, there’s no push to get him out of the closet.

Albertalli perfectly writes about the high school theater experience. For those that have been through it, you’ll feel transported back to your high school hallways.

Final say: Time for Kate’s spotlight. ★★★★☆
