On their fourth studio album, 5 Seconds of Summer show their growth from what started as teen heartthrobs to now being a genuine pop-rock band.
From the first moments of the album, the sound is stadium ready and is begging for a crowd to be screaming the lyrics. “Red Desert” is a perfect intro with good basslines in the verses leading to a drum dominated chorus.
Following this, at least the next five songs in a row are strong enough to be singles – and at this point, all have been. “Old Me” stands out as a thank you letter to their younger selves for sticking with their ambitions, while “Wildflower” has an ‘80s vibe with great synthesizer hits in the chorus.
It’s clear that the band is able to evolve – making themselves solid players for longevity.
Final say: Passion ignites. ★★★★☆
