A remake of the 1990 film that was based on the Roald Dahl novel, The Witches doesn’t seem too know what audience it wants to capture.

After the death of his parents, a young boy (Jahzir Kadeem Bruno) goes to live with his grandma (Octavia Spencer). She tells him about the history of witches and they’re both surprised to find themselves staying at a hotel where a clan of witches – led by the Grand High Witch (Anne Hathaway) – are having their annual meeting.

Hathaway is divine as the main villain. Though, viewers will notice quite a difference between Hathaway’s decidedly less scary witch form compared to Anjelica Huston’s in the original film.

The film is less scary to appeal to children but also has stronger adult themes that might not resonate with that targeted audience.

Final say: Inferior to the original. ★★★☆☆
