A touching story of reintroductions that also features a mostly deaf main character, This is Kind of an Epic Love Story lives up to its title.
After the death of his father, Nathan Bird doesn’t believe in happy endings. Though when Nate’s childhood best friend and secret crush Oliver James Hernández moves back into town, he starts to question if he can have a happy ending after all. With the help of his ex-girlfriend Flo and his friends, he explores the former relationship.
The representation in this story is incredible. Author Kheryn Callender manages to create characters that range on the LGBTQ+ spectrum, are of different races, can communicate in different languages and demonstrates how others adapt to others’ disabilities. The diversity of the characters stands out more here than in any other YA novel.
Final say: Kind of epic. ★★★★☆
