On: NBC
Starring: Ted Danson, Shelley Long, Nicholas Colasanto, Rhea Perlman, George Wendt & John Ratzenberger
Though it has its out-of-touch moments, Cheers is mostly a show ahead of its time and hits on social issues that are more important than ever today.
Former Boston Red Sox player Sam Malone (Ted Danson) owns the bar Cheers where Diane (Shelley Long) ends up becoming a waitress after her relationship ends. Sam’s former coach, Ernie (Nicholas Colasanto), and Carla (Rhea Perlman) also work there tending to regular customers like Norm (George Wendt) and Cliff (John Ratzenberger).
Throughout the first season, Sam and Diane have the typical will-they-won’t-they relationship of a sitcom – bringing up conversations about sexual harassment in the workplace.
There are other topics of interracial couples and gay men that are handled with care. You may hold your breath wondering how it will turn out, but you won’t be disappointed.
Final say: Still incredibly funny. ★★★★★
