Film: Assassination Nation

Opened: September 21, 2018

Directed by: Sam Levinson

Starring: Odessa Young, Suki Waterhouse, Hari Nef, Abra, Anika Noni Rose, Bella Thorne, Bill Skarsgård, Joel McHale, Maude Apatow, Colman Domingo, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Lukas Gage, Cody Christian, Danny Ramirez, Noah Galvin, Jennifer Morrison, J. D. Evermore, Cullen Moss, Susan Misner, Kathryn Erbe & Joe Chrest

Combining the domination of social media leaks with the insanity of the Salem Witch Trials, Assassination Nation kills with unpredictability and action, but falls short of providing characters worth caring about.

The residents of Salem are shocked when high-ranking officials, like Mayor Bartlett (Cullen Moss) and Principal Turrell (Colman Domingo), have their personal social lives leaked online. When Lily Colson (Odessa Young) is wrongfully named as the leak, she and her friends fight back against hate crimes.

Opening with trigger warnings about what topics are being covered, the film doesn’t shy away from anything and strongly focuses on LGBTQIA+ and pro-feminism rights.

The filming and editing allows for thrilling moments, but Young’s Lily never feels like a worthy lead focus. Many side characters get more chances to shine than the four females.

Final say: A modern look at witch hunts. ★★★☆☆
