A look into one of Hollywood’s biggest feuds of all time, Bette and Joan provides fantastic, multidimensional roles for lead actors Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange.
Unhappy with the roles they’re being offered, Bette Davis (Sarandon) and Joan Crawford (Lange) join forces to make the psychological horror film What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?. On the set of the film and for years thereafter, the two actresses constantly fight and break each other down.
In the scenes recreating the film, Lange and Sarandon fully transform into those actresses playing those characters. Sarandon is a perfect Davis down to the voice, while Lange is a master manipulator as Crawford.
The production value is wonderful and transports you back to the glamour – and highly sexist – Hollywood of the 1960s and 1970s.
Final say: Classic rivalry brought to life. ★★★★☆
