Former Glee actress and Dreamgirls Oliver Award-winner Amber Riley mononymously releases her self-titled debut EP, which shows off the strength and control of her voice on songs that perfectly fit her voice.
Her lyrics are real and relatable. The opener “BGE” owns her body type and background while standing her ground against another man.
Meanwhile, she duets with BJ the Chicago Kid on “Hood Living.” Both talk here about growing up in an area that may not be described as the best, but still loving it anyway and crediting who they are now with where they came from.
There are moments when you’ll want Riley to push further with her voice after being used to her belting from Glee, but she knows when to use those high notes – best heard on “Temporary.”
Final say: Got that good energy. ★★★★☆
