Film: Hush

Opened: April 8, 2016

Directed by: Mike Flanagan

Starring: Kate Siegel, John Gallagher Jr., Michael Trucco, Samantha Sloyan & Emilia Graves

With little dialogue, this horror film preys on you using alternate senses, which makes it an incredibly horrifying hour and a half.

Maddie (Kate Siegel) suffered from meningitis as a teen and later permanently lost her hearing and ability to speak. One night, she is stalked by a man (John Gallagher Jr.) who takes advantage of her loss by playing a sadistic cat-and-mouse game.

From the moment the man comes onscreen, there is a heightened sense of anxiety knowing that Maddie won’t be able to hear him and has limited communication abilities to call for help. The continued game is enough to keep you on the edge of your seat, especially with several twists along the way.

Siegel – who can hear and speak in real life – is incredibly convincing as she battles a menacing Gallagher.

Final say: Remember to breathe. ★★★★★
