Directed by: Lenny Abrahamson
Starring: Domhnall Gleeson, Ruth Wilson, Will Poulter, Liv Hill, Charlotte Rampling, Kate Phillips & Harry Hadden-Paton
Though the film itself is largely forgettable, Domhnall Gleeson continues to prove his star power, especially against his better-known costars.
When a maid (Liv Hill) at Hundreds Hall falls ill, Dr. Faraday (Gleeson) answers the call. He has a connection with the house as his mother used to be a maid there herself, but it has fallen into ruin over the years. The Ayres family whom resides there notice strange happenings.
Though the poster might suggest differently, the film does not rely on jump scares and its ghosts are more so secondary characters. There is a general unsettling feeling that revives each time the house is visited, and the anticipation of something happening is killer.
At the end, you’ll be left with an unsatisfied feeling as much is left unexplained. It’s a bit of a cheat, but it will give you some chills.
Final say: A lacking haunted house. ★★★☆☆
