Film: Water for Elephants

Opened: April 22, 2011

Directed by: Francis Lawrence

Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson, Hal Holbrook, Christoph Waltz, Tai, James Frain, Paul Schneider, Ken Foree, Tim Guinee, Mark Povinelli, Scott MacDonald & Jim Norton

Though it will transport you to a different time with its beautiful sets and costumes, Water for Elephants suffers from great leads with a lack of chemistry.

After the death of his parents, veterinary student Jacob Jankowski (Robert Pattinson) runs away and hops on board the train for the Benzini Bros. Circus. His animal skills are put to the test by ringmaster August (Christoph Waltz) when Jacob is put in charge of a newly acquired elephant, Rosie (Tai), whom Marlena (Reese Witherspoon) will perform with.

Separately, all three actors are fantastic in their roles. Pattinson is naïve, Waltz is ruthless, and Witherspoon is breathtaking. However, Jacob and Marlena’s love affair is only strong because you’re rooting for her to get away from the abusive August.

Final say: Not the greatest show on Earth. ★★★☆☆
