With a hilarious plot, Sister Act shows off Whoopi Goldberg’s comedic skills, even if the film isn’t very deep.
When Deloris Van Cartier (Goldberg) sees her mobster boyfriend Vince LaRocca (Harvey Keitel) kill a man, she’s thrown in the witness protection program as a nun at Saint Katherine’s Parish. Despite pushback from the Reverend Mother (Maggie Smith), Deloris revitalizes the parish’s choir.
The sisters in the parish are an absolute delight to watch as their excitement about the choir grows. Mary Wickes, Kathy Najimy and Wendy Makkena lead the front in distinctively funny roles. Their “corruption” by Deloris brings great energy with a perfectly bothered Smith overseeing them.
Goldberg is fantastic and shows off many skills. She’ll put a smile on your face as she takes down the man who’s wronged her.
Final say: I will follow. ★★★★☆
