In true Quentin Tarantino form, Django Unchained is filled with swearing and blood. And while you’ll remember that, you’ll also remember the epic tale that’s acted to perfection.
Bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) uses the slave Django (Jamie Foxx) to help him collect rewards. Dr. Schultz agrees to help Django find his wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), whom he was separated from. They have to go against Calvin J. Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), who owns her.
While many of the actors stand out in this film, Waltz, DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson make their mark. Jackson is hilarious as Candie’s house slave Stephen who doesn’t quite understand Django’s status alongside Dr. Schultz.
In a larger context, there’s commentary about slavery, racism, sexism and class that will make you think after the film ends.
Final say: An exciting modern western. ★★★★★
