A remake of the classic 1994 animated Disney film, The Lion King is almost a shot-for-shot remake but loses some of the magic.

After the death of his father Mufasa (James Earl Jones), young Simba (JD McCrary) runs away per the advice of his Uncle Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor). Adult Simba (Donald Glover) is convinced by his friends to go back to Pride Rock and take his place as king.

Most of the voice actors play their role with a sort of emptiness. In the end, it’s really just Timon (Billy Eichner) and Pumbaa (Seth Rogen) that shine with some comedic relief, despite still not living up to the original. However, Jones’ return is welcome.

The animation however is absolutely stunning and looks realistic enough to make you think you’re watching a National Geographic documentary.

Final say: Just watch the original. ★★★☆☆
